| Day 8: January 29, 2005 - St. John to Cincinnati |

Our flight was scheduled
to leave around 3pm from St. Thomas, so we needed
to be on the noon ferry. Kirsten got up and returned
the jeep while Howard finished packing. By 10am
we were ready to go.
The bags were picked up by 11 and we made our way
down to check out. On the way we overheard people
talk about the ice storm in Atlanta and how the
airport was closed. When we got to the airport,
Kirsten got on line at Delta while Howard waited
for the bags. When Howard finally got the bags,
Kirsten was next in line and it was not looking
good.
Both flights from St. Thomas to Atlanta were cancelled
because Atlanta was closed. We worked with the agent
at the desk for over an hour, but she could not
get us back to Cincinnati until Monday. So we took
our tickets and started to look for a hotel.
We overheard that there were no hotels on St. Thomas
from the Delta supervisor, so we went to the Westin
desk and threw ourselves at their mercy. We were
able to get a room for a couple of nights at a reasonable
rate. We got back on the ferry and were back in
a Westin room around 3:45pm.
It took until almost 6pm to get the bags since they
came back on a different boat. We got our shorts
on and started to investigate dinner options.
We ended up going into town and dining at the Lime
Inn. It was the same as Howard remembered from 15
years ago. Rich, the one-armed owner, has expanded
the place a bit, but still works there half of the
week. Dinner was the best all week and we topped
it off by having a warm brownie covered in vanilla
ice cream and hot fudge. Fantastic.
We went to sleep knowing that tomorrow would be
a better day. |
