7, 2005 - Day 3 |
|
|
| |
| Today's
breakfast at Ullikana: lemon poppy seed muffins,
fruit plate with blueberries, raspberries, apricots,
chocolate crepes with light ricotta filling covered
with raspberry coulis. |
| |
| With
assistance from Roy, we choose to go to the other
side of the park and hike up the Parkman trail then
cross over to Bald Peak. The hike up Parkman was
nice. It interspersed open rocky sections with tree
covered sections. Stopping only for a few photos,
we made the summit in about an hour. From the summit,
we had a great view of Upper and Lower Hadlock Ponds,
Northeast Harbor, and in the distance, Southeast
Harbor beyond Norumbega Mountain. We even spotted
a few eagles/falcons that we riding the air currents
around the peak. |
| |
| We
left Parkman and hiked the 0.2 mile to Bald Peak.
Very similar views, but a little higher. We spent
a bit of time then headed down. The wind had picked
up and was stiff at times. We scrambled down the
exposed face to the trail head and determined that
we chose the right way to ascend. |
| |
| Since
things were going well, we decided to find the Hadlock
Brook Trail and follow it over the Hadlock Brook
Bridge (a Rockefeller bridge built in 1920) to Upper
Hadlock Pond where we would break for lunch. The
trail was very pleasant and took us through old
growth to new growth forest. We paused at the bridge
for some pictures and then continued to the pond. |
| |
| When
we reached the pond we found a lovely rock next
to the water where we could perch and snack. As
we gazed into the crystal clear water, we saw small
fish, large tadpoles, and then a mother duck/loon
with 2 ducklings/loonlings. We continued along the
shore of the pond and almost lost the trail when
we saw fluorescent streamers on trees and stakes
in the ground. A few steps farther, we discovered
that the Park Service was working on the trail and
adding wide boards for you to walk on. |
| |
| The
boards quickly took us to the bottom end of Upper
Hadlock Pond. The plan called for us to find the
trail to Lower Hadlock Pond, which should have been
on the other side of Route 198/3. We found a signpost
where it looked like signs to trails used to be.
There was also a lot of water on what looked to
be the trail. Unable to continue in that direction,
we backtracked to the carriage roads which took
us back to the Parkman parking lot. |
| |
| We
drove back into town and cleaned ourselves up from
our 4 hours of adventure. After another ice cream
cone at CJ's Big Dipper, we retired to relax and
recover out strength prior to the big mini-golf
rematch! At precisely 5:55pm, the final pairing
teed off from the first hole of the Original Course
at Pirates Cove Mini Golf. Howard par'd it, but
Kirsten had a few just graze the lip and that set
the tone for the rest of the match. Despite 5 holes
in one between us, we couldn't win a free game.
After 18 holes, we checked the scorecard and found
that Howard won. |
| |
| Our
next stop was a lobster pound on the other side
of the bridge in Trenton. We drove out there only
to find that it is closed on Sundays! Quickly changing
plans, we came back to Bar Harbor and went to Miguel's
for Mexican food. Howard had the special fish taco
and Kirsten had the shrimp taco. Great food - we'll
be back on our next trip! |
| |
| We
ended the evening by fighting our way to the back
of Ben & Bill's for some chocolate and fudge. |
