Today's
breakfast at Ullikana: maple syrup muffins, melon
with raspberry vinaigrette, puffed pancakes with
fresh blueberries and raspberries.
For
the day's main activity, we panned to rent bikes
and ride the carriage roads. We went to the shop
and got two mountain bikes - a Raleigh and a Diamondback,
both with front shocks. They are well used bikes,
but mostly comfortable. After a few adjustments,
we headed out West Street towards the park. We entered
the park and took Duck Brook Road to the carriage
paths. Our path took us up to Witch Hole pond, then
down past Halfmoon Pond and Breakneck Pond to the
top of Eagle Lake. We chose to go along the Eastern
shore of the lake. It was a pretty ride without
a lot of company on the path. At the bottom of Eagle
Lake, we struck East again and passed the Western
shore or Bubble Pond. That's when the ride got tough.
We now faced a long climb up the eastern side of
the Pemetic Mountain. It was constantly uphill at
a small grade for over 3 miles. The road peaked
around the crossing of the Hunter's Brook trail
and then it was a quick descent down to the Wildwood
Stables. At the stables, we paused for a horse drawn
carriage holding about 15 passengers and being pulled
by 2 enormous horses.
After
a quick quaff of water, we descended to Jordan Pond
where we locked up the bikes and found a shady spot
beside the water to enjoy a snack. We also took
a moment to have refill our water bottles at the
Jordan Pond House restaurant. Feeling refreshed,
we headed back out on the carriage road.
We
joined up with the "Around Mountain" road
and climbed alongside the west of the pond. It was
another long climb up to Deer Creek Bridge where
we took some water. This is where the Deer Brook
Trail crosses the road - a trail we were on last
year descending from Penobscott mountain. The carriage
road passed west of the Bubbles as we cycled down
the northeast flank of Sargent mountain. A short
time later, we arrived back at Eagle Lake. This
time, we cruised along the Western shore enjoying
the breeze. At the top of the lake, we continued
back towards Duck Brook Road. We rode triumphantly
into town after cycling 19 miles through the park.
We were dusty and tired, but agreed it was fun and
we would do it again.
A brief stop for ice cream and then we headed back to the Inn to clean-up and relax. We sat for wine
and cheese and let the world go by. Howard went off to take some pictures while Kirsten found a comfy chair to sit and read. At 8pm, we headed to Galyn's for
our anniversary dinner. |
