| A big
day planned - we are going to the other
side of the island to explore Ram's Head
and some snorkeling. We took Centerline
Road from Cruz Bay to Coral Bay and were
nearly run off the road more times than
we can count. Then we took a right and followed
the road to the parking lot at Salt Pond
Bay.
The first part of the
trail is a rutted dirt road that leads down
to a smooth sandy beach. We walked along
the beach and noticed holes that we think
baby turtles crawled out of. THe bright
white beach leads into perfectly calm waters
- we'll have to come back here.
The next part of the trail
takes you up over the land to Blue Cobblestone
Bay. The trail needs some TLC, but it offered
great views of both bays. The descent to
Blue Cobblestone is a little confusing;
the trail parallels the beach with forks
that takes you down. Eventually the trail
drops you at the middle of the beach which
looks like many of the rocky beaches of
the northeast - but it was about 90 degrees,
so we remembered where we were.
Climbing up from the beach,
the trail becomes very exposed and hot.
We climbed up to the point where we could
see both sides of the head and there was
a fierce breeze slicing through the gap.
On the left, waves crashed and pounded the
cliffs while on the right the seas were
calm and peaceful. From the top of Rams
Head there is a wonderful panorama of sea
and island. We sat and took pictures and
let the scenery sink into our minds. We
noticed some rain coming and started back
down. The rain split around us and we got
a few cooling drops.
Back at Cobblestone Beach,
we picked a nice spot and went into the
water to cool off and snorkel. The visibility
was not great and there was not a lot of
fish life. We turned back and then saw a
spotted eagle ray - it was about 3 feet
long and stunning.
We hiked back and came
back to Cruz Bay for lunch at Baked in the
Sun. After some cleanup and downtime, we
dipped in the pool and dried off in the
sun.
