| Day 14: January 4, 2006 - Transfer to El Calafate, Argentina |

Our arrangements were to
transfer from Hosteria El Pillar to El Chalten where
we would catch a bus to take us to El Calafate.
It sounded fine - with one exception. The bus left
El Chalten at 6pm and it was an estimated 4 hour
ride to El Calafate.
That left us with a lot of time on our hands and
not a lot of pesos because El Chalten does not have
a bank branch of any bank and most places did not
take credit cards. We decided to sleep in and mosey
down for breakfast around 9am. Everything was leisurely
and we cleared out of our rooms around 10:15am.
Then we went out to view the new snow on the peaks
of FitzRoy and it's close cerros. It was another
stunning day in Patagonia and everyone got some
great shots.

We were picked up at 2pm to go into El Chalten.
We had lunch in town and then Dad, Robin, and Kirsten
went off in search of snacks for the bus. With the
few remaining pesos, they did pretty well.
The bus left at 6pm and stopped once for a bathroom
break around halfway at La Leona hotel. It was a
run down dump at the crook of the river where we
think Perito Moreno once killed a puma. Not exactly
a place of note in history. Back on the bus, we
rumbled on towards El Calafate seeing guanacos and
some very pretty views of the sunset. The bus pulled
into the terminal around 10:30pm and we were met
and taken to our estancia where we had a snack and
promptly crashed. |
