| Day 16: November 15

Sydney is on daylight time so the sun rises a bit later here. As such we had an
extra hour to sleep in and took advantage of it. The goal was to get some exploring of the immediate areas and get our bearings.
We struck out for the Rocks district which is one
of the older sections of town. In fact it turned
out that the Rocks was one of the first settlements
in the area. A number of buildings date to the 1800's
and it still is a vibrant area. It sits in the shadow
of the harbor bridge and is home to many shops and
pubs.
Next we made our way past the circular quay to the opera house. We took a number of pictures and investigated shows. There were seats
available for this evening's performance of "Scenes from a Separation" in the drama theatre. We inquired about a tour and booked
one for the next day.
Then it was back to the Rocks for lunch at a Thai
restaurant and time to send Howard up one of the
pylons of the Sydney Harbor Bridge to get a bird's
eye view of the harbor. Along the way, Howard discovered
that the bridge can expand up to 180mm due to heat.
The result was to mount the bridge on hinges on
both sides. It was a great view.
We wound up our day with a 6:30 show at the Opera House. It was rather ironic that on our honeymoon we saw a play about a breakup of a marriage.
However, it was well performed by the small troop and we enjoyed it. The theatre itself was very 70's and was so small and acoustically sound that
the actors did not need amplification. After the show, we stopped at a small Italian restaurant that Kirsten's parents recommended in the alley by
the hotel for a very nice dinner. |
