| Day 4: November 3 -
Noosa to Fraser Island |

The day is broken up into two parts - a hike and a mad dash to catch a ferry. First, we hike. I'm not
really sure we can call it a hike since everyone was encouraged to wear sneakers, but that's life. The walk took us from Noosa beach along the coastline to Alexandria
beach. It was a beautiful walk that reminded me a lot of the Marginal Way in Maine. The path was comfortably narrow and there were spectacular views of the beaches
along the way. We ended up at a spot called Hell's Gate because it is a forked set of rocks jutting out angrily into the ocean.
From Hell's Gate we had our first views of Alexandria beach. A long sweeping white expanse of sand. With the onshore winds, the bay was rough. We piled down to the
beach and walked along the shoreline getting our feet wet. We stopped about two-thirds of the way down and slipped into our togs (or cozzies). We did not go to the
end of the beach as it was for those "white pointees" who prefer to swim without their cozzies.
After slogging out way up from the beach to the
van, we began the second part of the day. A drive
to Hervey Bay to catch the 4PM ferry to Fraser Island.
The ferry ride was 45 minutes to the island. Along
the drive we had some fun. We were primarily driving
through areas that are planted for forestry and
harvesting for building material. After 2 hours
on the road, Carrie needed a restroom. Amanda told
her there were none around and Carrie agreed to
squat behind a tree. They pulled off to the side
of the road and Carrie and Maureen squatted behind
the trailer. Once they were settled, Amanda moved
the trailer forward a few feet. Everyone (included
Carrie and Maureen) got a good laugh from that.
Since I wrote last night's entry before dinner,
I didn't go back to update it. It was one of our
free nights and Amanda was kind enough to drop us
in town. We selected a nice looking Italian place
and waited while they cleared space for 6. When
we finally sat down, the service was glacially slow.
That got everyone talking.
As we go to bed, it's about 4 or 5 AM on the east
coast and it does not look good for Kerry. He's
down 252 - 240. It's disappointing but somehow predictable.
Maybe we should just become expatriates. |
